Trained at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux and Bordeaux University, Julien Marchal composes from a studio built in his grandparents’ old house on the banks of the Garonne. Drawing from the worlds of Arvo Part, Erik Satie, Boards of Canada and Nils Frahm, he moves fluidly between solo piano, electronic production and cross-genre collaboration. In 2016 he founded Whales Records, an independent label dedicated to contemporary instrumental and electronic music. His INSIGHT series (I through V) has become a touchstone for modern neoclassical piano, released on Whales Records and naive. Beyond solo work, Julien has earned an RIAA Gold Single, had his music placed in major TV series including How to Get Away with Murder (ABC), Ray Donovan (Showtime), The Blacklist (NBC) and True Detective (HBO), and performed across Europe and North America.
